Zen is a medicine for the ill effects of the mental paralysis and anxiety which come from excessive self-consciousness. It must be seen against the background of societies regulated by heavy stress and punctilious ritual. As a medicine for these conditions, it does not seek to overthrow the conventions themselves, but, on the contrary, takes them for granted.
It can be extremely difficult to wrench yourself out of deep-seated societal norms. Painful, even. I work on it every day, but still fall victim to pointless distractions that really contribute very little to my life.
The idea is to slice through all that noise with silence. Let it be, and let it be nothing. Only once you are nothing then can you become something.
